Simple guide to laying a patio

1. Planning & Preparation:

  • Choose the patio location and measure accurately.

  • Draw a plan and mark out the area using pegs and string.

  • Excavate to a depth of 150mm.

  • Add and compact a 50-80mm sub-base layer (hardcore), then lay landscape fabric to prevent weeds.

2. Laying the Paving Slabs:

  • Mix mortar (1 part cement to 4 parts sharp sand).

  • Lay the first slab, ensuring it’s level.

  • Continue laying slabs with 5-10mm gaps, checking levels regularly.

3. Pointing & Finishing:

  • Let mortar dry for 24 hours.

  • Fill joints with mortar and clean up excess.

  • Consider sealing the patio for durability.

​

Tips: Start small, take your time, use proper tools, and get help for heavy lifting.
